History of Chittar
The region which was surrounded by the Kakkad river was named as Chinnar later it curtailed and termred as Chittar. Besides it is said that the Tamilians who worked in the Chittar gardens used to refer tributary of Kakkad river which flows through the garden as Chinnar and later the region around the chinnar was widely known as Chittar. Chittar and the other eastern regions were the part of the ancient Nilakal town. There were human settlements in their region before Christ. The midland rubber produce company which was established in Chittar by the scheme of development of plantation Corp(1894), is the first plantation corp establishment in Travancore. Diwan sir. C P Ramaswamy Iyer proclaimed the eastern regions including Chittar as the food production area, protect Travancore from scarcity of food which was the result of second world war which is started in 1939 and peasants from Pandalam, Aranmula, Adoor,Mallapally,Ayroor,Kozhencherry and Chengannure began to cultivate in the land they got from the Government. Chittar Grama Panchayath includes the area around Nilakkal town which lies near Kakkad river. Food products like rice, potato, tapioca , banana etc were mainly cultivated from the beginning of the human settlements Hindus, Muslims ,Christians and various tribal groups used to live in Chittar. Our culture is closely linked with the traditional festivals. Among these festivals Christmas and New Year celebrations are unforgettable. The celebrations which is held with out any destination or difference among the castes, religions or politics, servers as a bright example for Indian Secularism . The pre primary school which began in 1940 at the place in Koothattukulam, which was donated by Pathanamthitta Puthanpeedikayil Plamootil Kathanar. Plathanathu family developed and became the Govt. HSS Chittar. After the second worlds war people began to run vehicle with the help of steam due to the scarcity of fuel. Vadasserikaara and Seethathodu Grama Panhayath splitted and Chittar Gramma Panhayath was organized on 30-09-1970. Sri. V S Nanu was the first Panchayath president . Now Chittar Panchayath comes under Chittar –Seethathodu Village , Ranni Taluk , Pathanamthitta District. Chittar is now under ranni assembly constituency and Pathanamthitta Loksabha constituency. Anto Antony was elected as MP from Pathanamthitta and Adoor Prakash MLA from Konni.
